Evanescence Is ‘More Than Halfway’ Done With The New Album, Says Amy Lee

Evanescence is “more than halfway” through the creation of their next studio album, according to frontwoman Amy Lee, who describes the band as being in a “super energized creatively mode.” In a new interview, she detailed their “freeform” and “no rules” approach to the new record and the “weird teenager phase” of their current live shows.

Speaking with the ALT 105.1 radio station at the Louder Than Life festival, Lee gave the most detailed update yet on the follow-up to 2021’s The Bitter Truth.

“I’d say we’re more than halfway. We’re really getting there. [I’m] really excited about it,” she confirmed. She explained that the band is deep into the most challenging part of the process. “I think we have all the songs that are gonna be on it at least started, so we’re in that moment of finessing and beautifying and writing lyrics and doing the hard stuff where I slam my head up against the wall.”

In a previous interview, Lee described the album’s creation as a very liberated and open process. “We’re doing this album kind of in a way that is very freeform,” she said. “We have a few songs with one producer, we have a few songs with another one over here. We’re just doing whatever feels good. No rules except what the song wants.”

This creative period comes as the band is in what Lee humorously calls an “in-between phase” with their live performances.

“We’re in this kind of in-between phase right now because we were touring our last album, The Bitter Truth, for quite a while… and we’re midway through the process of making our next album now,” she explained. “So we just have a handful of shows this year, and it’s that moment where we’re, like, ‘Well, we can’t just like do the old thing anymore,’ and ‘we can’t do the new songs…’ It’s a weird teenager phase of what we’re doing. It is fun, though. It’s perfect for the festival setup.”

The band’s recent flurry of activity certainly points to a “super energized creatively mode.” In addition to working on their new album, Evanescence recently released the song “Afterlife” for the Netflix series Devil May Cry, collaborated with K.Flay on the track “Fight Like A Girl” for the John Wick universe film Ballerina, and joined forces with Spiritbox‘s Courtney LaPlante and Poppy for the single “End Of You.”

Evanescence is set to tour Australia and New Zealand this fall, including several dates opening for Metallica.
