Eight Bands That Parted Ways With Their Drummers In The Last Month And A Half

Over the past six weeks, at least eight major rock and metal bands have unexpectedly announced the departure of their drummers.

A notable and somewhat unusual trend has emerged in the rock and metal world over the past six weeks, with at least eight prominent bands announcing the departure of their drummers. The string of lineup changes has even caught the attention of seasoned musicians like Dream Theater‘s Mike Portnoy, who jokingly said the he is “scared” for his career. The reasons for these splits vary, from amicable decisions to pursue new paths to more controversial and abrupt exits.

Perhaps the most convoluted situation involves Zak Starkey and legendary rock group The Who. Starkey was let go by the band in mid-April after a 29-year tenure, with the band stating it was a “collective decision.” Starkey expressed that he was “surprised and saddened.” In a surprising turn, guitarist Pete Townshend announced Starkey’s reinstatement just three days later, citing “communication issues.” However, the reunion was short-lived, as on May 19, Starkey was dismissed from The Who for a second time, with Scott Devours named as the new drummer. Starkey offered conflicting statements, one suggesting an amicable parting where vocalist Roger Daltrey had “retired” him, and another calling the manner of his dismissal “total boll*cks,” making it clear he was fired.

Another surprising move came from the Foo Fighters, who parted ways with Josh Freese in mid-May. Freese had stepped in following the death of Taylor Hawkins and toured extensively for their album But Here We Are. Freese stated, “The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they’ve decided ‘to go in a different direction’ with their drummer,” adding that no further reason was given. He later admitted he was “just a bit shocked and disappointed” but maintained his sense of humor. The Foo Fighters have not yet named a permanent replacement.

Death metal band Aborted announced an abrupt split with drummer Ken Bedene after 15 years. While initial details were scarce, with Kevin Paradis stepping in for their European tour, Bedene later addressed his exit. He cited an online interaction with a young female fan that he claimed was “consensual and reciprocated,” but acknowledged, “I understand it should have never happened,” even if she was of legal age in her state. He stated he left to “protect the people and the community I’ve cared about.”

In contrast, the departure of David-Karl Friedrich from Electric Callboy in late April after 13 years appeared amicable. The band announced that Friedrich “decided that he wants to do something new,” and they wished him well. Frank Zummo, known for his work with Sum 41, has since filled the drumming position.

Jam band Umphrey’s McGee also saw a significant change in mid-May, with longtime drummer Kris Myers splitting from the group after 22 years. The parting seemed to be on good terms, with the band sharing photos of a celebration. Regarding his decision, Myers stated, “The decision wasn’t easy, but the biggest ones seldom are… We collectively felt it was time for me to pursue other elements of my musical creativity that have been calling to me.” Scotty Zwang and Duane Trucks are currently filling in.

Swedish melodic death metal pioneers In Flames announced in late May that they were parting ways with drummer Tanner Wayne. “It is with profound gratitude and appreciation that we announce our creative decision to part ways with Tanner Wayne,” the band said. Wayne had joined in 2019 and played on the albums I, The Mask and Foregone. Jon Rice has been recruited for their current European tour dates.

Progressive metal innovators Cynic confirmed on May 29 that they had parted ways with drummer Matt Lynch, who had been with the band since 2015 and appeared on their Ascension Codes album. The band stated, “We’re thankful for the time and music shared and wish Matt all the best as he moves ahead.” This followed a recent performance at Maryland Deathfest where Michel Belanger of Gorguts handled drumming duties.

Also on May 29, gothic metal mainstays Paradise Lost announced they were parting ways with Guido Zima Montanarini, who had joined the band in 2023. “We thank Guido for his contributions to the band and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” the band posted. A replacement has not yet been named.
