Boston punk veterans Dropkick Murphys have unleashed a blistering new track titled “Citizen I.C.E.,” a direct musical condemnation of the recent lethal actions taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Minneapolis.
The song is a modernized reworking of the band’s 2005 deep cut “Citizen C.I.A.” and features guest vocals from hardcore outfit Haywire. The release comes in the wake of high-profile tragedies in Minnesota, specifically the shooting deaths of American citizens Renee Good and ICU nurse Alex Pretti at the hands of federal agents. The band had previously teased the track on Instagram, using snippets of the audio to soundtrack a video calling attention to Good‘s death, before the subsequent death of Pretti further fueled public outrage.
Lyrically, the group does not mince words regarding the qualifications and character of the officers involved. The updated chorus delivers a harsh assessment:
“Too scared to join the military/ Too dumb to be a cop/ Citizen I.C.E.”
In a statement accompanying the official release, Dropkick Murphys made their position clear, framing the song as a necessary act of resistance against state violence.
“As Americans are being executed in the street, we feel it is our duty to raise consciousness, and be one of the voices speaking against this nightmare,” the band stated. “‘Citizen I.C.E.’ is FOR THE PEOPLE. Stand strong against tyranny. Use it however you want. In Solidarity, with Love, Dropkick Murphys.”
“Citizen I.C.E.” serves as the lead track for the band’s upcoming split album with Haywire, titled New England Forever. While the collection will land on digital streaming platforms on March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day), physical copies of the LP will be sold exclusively during the band’s upcoming tour. The St. Patrick’s Day Tour, featuring both bands, is scheduled to kick off next week on February 9.
