Dream Theater Experiencing ‘Best Year Of Our Career’ After 40 Years, Says Jordan Rudess

Dream Theater are enjoying a major resurgence, with Jordan Rudess calling this their best year, set to perform ‘Parasomnia’ in full on a fall US tour.

Four decades into their legendary career, progressive metal titans Dream Theater are experiencing an unprecedented resurgence, with keyboardist Jordan Rudess declaring that the band is currently in the midst of “one of the best [runs], if not the best run, or the best year of our career.” This career peak, fueled by the return of founding drummer Mike Portnoy and their acclaimed new album, Parasomnia, will be celebrated with a new US tour this fall where the band will perform the entire record live.

Speaking in a new interview with The Keyboard Chronicles, Rudess expressed his astonishment at the band’s current momentum. “It’s really a great time for Dream Theater, and it’s really unusual because, think about it: we were just out there celebrating the 40-year anniversary,” he said (as transcribed by Blabbermouth). “But it’s been incredible — after 40 years, to have one of the best [runs], if not the best run, or the best year of our career. So we’re just doing it, enjoying it and kind of trying to take it in at the same point.”

Much of that excitement stems from the band’s new album, Parasomnia, which was released in February and marked the first Dream Theater record with Portnoy in 15 years. The album has been “very well received,” and Rudess notes that the new material has been explosive on stage.

“Live, we’ve only played two of the songs, ‘Night Terror’ and ‘Midnight Messiah’,” he shared. “And they’re really, really fun to play live. You don’t know until you do it, but they have a lot of power. There’s a lot of energy in those songs, and you can feel it. It’s very tangible.”

Following a sold-out 40th-anniversary tour earlier this year and a current run of European dates, the band will bring the full power of their new album to North America. Dream Theater has announced a new 30-city US tour, billed as “An Evening With Dream Theater,” which will kick off on September 5 in Reading, Pennsylvania. On this run, the band will be performing the Parasomnia album in its entirety, along with classics and fan favorites from their extensive catalog. The tour is set to conclude on October 25 in Long Island, New York.
