Marcus Andersson, who drummed for Swedish crust and death metal band Disfear for close to three decades, has died after four years with glioblastoma. The band announced it on Tuesday morning.
“With profound sadness and grief, we are sharing the news of the untimely passing of our longtime friend and drummer, Marcus Andersson. Marcus fought incredibly hard but ultimately lost his 4-year battle with glioblastoma and leaves behind his beloved wife, children and dog.”
“Marcus has played with Disfear since 1998, contributing significantly to the creative trajectory of the band. Marcus was the best of friends, an incredible drummer, and a driving force, full of passion. A big heart, pumping to a rhythm that only he could uniquely master, has sadly stopped beating.”
“Losing Marcus, following the losses of Henrik and Tomas, is hard to comprehend.”
“Hug your loved ones.”
Andersson joined Disfear in 1998, the same year vocalist Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg did. The two of them played on everything the band released from that point, including Misanthropic Generation in 2003 and Live The Storm in 2008, the records that took the band beyond Sweden.
The statement’s reference to Henrik and Tomas concerns two former bandmates.
Lindberg, who also fronted At The Gates, died on September 16, 2025 at 52. He had been diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma in December 2023, disclosed it publicly the month before his death, and died of complications related to his treatment. Andersson‘s death comes a day short of a year later.
Bassist Henke Frykman died in 2011, also after a long illness.
Disfear formed in Stockholm in 1989 and built a following on a blend of d-beat and Swedish death metal. Live The Storm, produced by Kurt Ballou and released through Relapse, remains their most widely heard record.
Metal Stop sends its condolences to Andersson‘s wife and children, his bandmates and everyone who knew him.
