In a recent conversation with “KillerTube“, Coal Chamber frontman Dez Fafara opened up about the band’s triumphant return to the stage at the Sick New World festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. The performance on April 25 marked the nu-metal group’s first live appearance since drummer Mikey “Bug” Cox successfully defeated a severe cancer diagnosis.

Last week, the drummer revealed that he was diagnosed with stage three cancer on April 1, 2025. Describing the terrifying ordeal as a “dark” period, he endured a yearlong battle that included brutal rounds of radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery before finally being declared cancer-free.

Mikey shared the full details of his diagnosis, recovery, and new charitable endeavor in a public statement:

“GRATITUDE. It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot, but it hits differently for me these days.”

“April 1, 2025, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer. I’m not unique. It feels like a lot of us are dealing with this or know someone who is. It’s dark, it’s scary, and it changes the lives of everyone in its orbit.”

“The first thing I said to my wife was that I was going to fight with everything I had for my family! There were a lot of days I couldn’t make it out of bed, but I didn’t want cancer to define me. So, I finished building the house I was working on with my Bash Construction Group company, and I wrote some of the best music of my life! After a yearlong battle and absolutely brutal rounds of radiation, chemotherapy, and eventually surgery, I’m so grateful to be able to say I made it to CANCER FREE.”

“The second thing I said to myself was that I wanted to create something positive out of this situation, and that’s where we are today. I hope you’ll join me as I partner with Fxck Cancer to auction off a custom, one-of-a-kind drum kit from ddrum, Scorpion Percussion, TRX Cymbals, and Gator Cases with proceeds to bring awareness, support and resources to those who may find themselves in this unpredictable and unwanted community of warriors.”

“I’ll have so many people to thank and share my story with in the coming days, and I will be highlighting some of the amazing people and organizations that are working with us to make this goal of mine a reality.”

“Today I celebrate life, healing, and the strength it takes to survive. I cannot wait to get back on stage post-cancer. These upcoming shows are going to be something truly special.”

“I chose to partner with Fxck Cancer, because of its bold, direct approach to a disease. Their work breaks stigma, encourages honest conversations, and promotes early detection in a way that resonates — especially with younger audiences and the music community. Its unapologetic voice makes the message feel urgent, relatable and empowering, helping people face cancer head-on instead of avoiding it.”

Reflecting on his bandmate’s resilience, Dez Fafara shared the heavy emotional toll the situation took on everyone involved.

“That [gig] was insane. So, first of all, for those who don’t know, in Coal Chamber, my drummer Mike went through cancer, stage four cancer that should have taken him out. I don’t think a lot of people may have survived that. I watched him — it’s hard for me to talk about, actually. I may get emotional. But I just hit him every day. I watched him go after it. He’s a great father, a great husband, a great man,” he said (as transcribed by Blabbermouth).

The frontman went on to detail how their relationship has evolved since the early days of the band, deepening significantly during the health crisis.

“When we started, [Mikey] was 17 in Coal Chamber, so although we bonded on music and we were friends, we were never ‘tight tight’ because of the age gap. But now he’s got a mortgage, a kid, wife,” he continued. “We bond on a level that is unbelievable. And watching him go head-on and take on the amount of chemo and the amount of things he had to do, and do some other stuff with me on the side that we can’t discuss yet, while he was going through that was a f**king miracle.”

The highly anticipated Las Vegas set proved to be an overwhelming experience for the band. Dez Fafara described the raw emotion of walking out on stage alongside his longtime friend after such a harrowing year.

“Watching him take the stage [on April 25] at Sick New World, watching that show go down, they were singing ‘Sway‘, which is ‘the roof is on fire’ [chorus], 10 minutes before we even came out… Between songs, I couldn’t even hear myself think, the crowd was so loud. The first person I hugged was Mike, and we both — I busted into tears, I’m not afraid to say it. And I’m just really blessed that he’s with us, and people are gonna be really blessed to hear what went on while he was going through all of that with Coal Chamber. Again, that’s for another time. But thank you for asking. That show was magnificent,” he concluded.

Coal Chamber initially reunited for their first shows in eight years at the 2023 edition of Sick New World, followed by an appearance at the Inkcarceration Music And Tattoo Festival and a U.S. tour supporting Mudvayne.

The group has faced multiple health hurdles in recent years. In 2021, a severe bout of COVID-19 nearly claimed Dez Fafara‘s life. The lingering after-effects of the virus, specifically inflammation in his lower heart, forced him to cancel his other band DevilDriver‘s scheduled appearance at the 2023 Bloodstock Open Air festival in the U.K.

Consequently, Coal Chamber was forced to cancel their heavily anticipated “Fiend For The Fans” U.S. tour in January 2025. The trek, which was supposed to feature support from Fear Factory, Twiztid, Black Satellite, and Frayle, had originally been scheduled for August 2024 before being postponed due to the frontman’s ongoing medical emergency.
