Canadian metal visionary Devin Townsend has established a career ranging from extremely heavy records and atmospheric detours to character-driven releases. However, his upcoming project, The Moth, stands entirely on its own. Arriving without a pre-existing template, the album isn’t a shift made purely for novelty, but rather a culmination: a massive undertaking conceived from the beginning as orchestral, choral, and theatrical in scope. The ambitious scale was required to underline the emotional transformation at the heart of the concept.
Over a decade in the making, The Moth will officially arrive on May 29, 2026. The 24-track record began as a vague vision that existed in the back of Devin Townsend‘s mind as his “life’s work”. The pivotal moment occurred approximately six years ago following an acoustic show in Amsterdam. The musician was approached by the head of the Noord Nederlands Orkest (North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra) with an offer to bring orchestral grandeur to his extensive discography.
His response was immediate and telling: if those forces were going to be assembled, he wanted to use them for something entirely new. This original work had been circling him for years, waiting for an opportunity to be fully realized. That was the exact moment The Moth transformed from a distant idea into reality.
Coinciding with the album’s official announcement, Devin Townsend has revealed the first introduction to this new world via the track “Enter The City“. The song is accompanied by a visually striking music video created by Studio Sparks.
Explaining the narrative concept behind the music, he said it was:
“a loose story following someone who realizes that old patterns of behavior are no longer serving them. By digging in and sitting with themselves, an internal conflict is revealed, one they may have been resisting or unconsciously rationalizing for years”
He further noted that “Enter The City” occurs near the very beginning of that story arc.
The Moth will be released across three distinct parts. The main studio album will be accompanied by The Moth – The Afterlife, which highlights the pure grandeur of the orchestra and choir. Additionally, The Moth – The War captures the raw emotion of the project’s live musical debut, which took place in March 2025 in The Netherlands.
The project will be available in multiple formats, including a limited deluxe 3CD+Blu-ray artbook containing the main album, The Moth – The Afterlife, and The Moth – The War (Live). The Blu-ray features the full live film, along with Dolby Atmos and High Resolution Stereo mixes of the studio material. Other physical formats include a limited 2CD edition, a standard CD jewelcase, a triple-gatefold 180g 2LP, and digital versions.

Addressing the central gravitational theme of the album, Devin Townsend names it plainly as true self-acceptance—a practiced willingness to face what is uncomfortable without turning away.
“The most obvious metaphor for change within the concept of this project was a moth: from caterpillar to an entirely different creature — one so drawn to the light that it burns itself away. What remains is immutable — only the spirit.”
At the hardest moments during production, when abandoning the project might have seemed rational, the musician pointed to his dedicated team as the decisive factor. The colossal undertaking was brought to life by an incredible roster of musicians and contributors. Alongside the Noord Nederlands Orkest and orchestrators Joseph Stevenson and Niels Bye Nielsen, the project features longtime band members Darby Todd, Mike Keneally, and James Leach. Guest appearances include Steve Vai, Anneke Van Giersbergen, and Lynn Wu (Ou).
Visual artists Travis Smith and Eliran Kantor contributed to the overarching aesthetic, with key creative consultation provided by Mike St-Jean. The technical crew included co-mixer Chris Edrich, recording engineers Ben Searles and Jacob Hermann, Atmos mixer Ron Searles, and mastering engineer Troy Glessner, alongside choirs from various countries across the globe who helped land the behemoth project.
