Dave Mustaine Wants Megadeth’s Final Concert To Be On The Moon

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine, who has confirmed the band’s upcoming seventeenth album and world tour will be their last, is not planning to go out quietly. In a new, exclusive interview with Metal Hammer, the thrash icon revealed his ultimate, and literal, moonshot goal for the band’s final-ever performance: a gig in outer space.

While discussing the end of Megadeth’s legendary 40-plus-year run, Mustaine explained that he is entirely serious about playing the band’s final note in the cosmos.

“I hope we’ll be playing up in space,” Mustaine revealed. “I think that will be a really fitting climax. And I’m not talking about on the side of a vomit comet. A gig on the Moon, a full moon landing, that would be cool.”

Mustaine‘s ambition is fueled by the recent wave of celebrity and commercial space travel. He pointed to high-profile figures like William Shatner and Richard Branson as proof that the concept is no longer pure science fiction.

“I saw they sent up a bunch of celebrities into space and I thought ‘Well, if them, why not me?’, you know?” Mustaine said. “I’m just watching how that all progresses. I know Elon Musk and Richard Branson were working on interstellar travel. I think people are going to be travelling to space a lot sooner than you think.”

When the publication asked if he was joking, Mustaine doubled down, arguing that the barrier to space is already thinner than most people realize.

“People already travel over 40,000 feet altitude, and when you get to that kind of atmosphere you’re basically already in space,” he argued. “So I do think it’s going to happen. The question is, are people going to be able to inhabit the moon?”

While he’s keen on visiting, Mustaine confirmed he isn’t looking to permanently relocate. He mused on the impracticality of interstellar colonization, particularly a trip to Mars.

“Personally I’d never want to live on a planet away from the world we live in,” he said. “People were talking about a trip to Mars, but all I can imagine is somebody suddenly going ‘Oh! I forgot my toothbrush!’ That would be the longest flight ever!”

The Megadeth farewell tour is expected to last “three to five years.” While a lunar concert may be a long shot, Mustaine remains focused on a grand finale. After Metallica famously played Antarctica, Megadeth playing the moon would be a fittingly bombastic final chapter.
