Dark Tranquillity frontman Mikael Stanne has opened up about the highly anticipated upcoming orchestral concerts honoring the foundational Swedish melodic death metal scene. Speaking with journalist Marcus Schleutermann of Rock Hard magazine during last month’s Rock Hard Festival 2026 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, the vocalist shared his immense excitement for the classical crossover events.
Dubbed “The Gothenburg Sound,” the three-night engagement will see the esteemed Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra reimagine the influential catalogs of In Flames, At The Gates, and Dark Tranquillity. The monumental shows are scheduled to take place this coming December at the Göteborgs Konserthus. Adding profound emotional weight to the performances, the concerts will serve as a dedicated memorial tribute to the late Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg, the iconic frontman of At The Gates and a vital architect of the region’s signature heavy music style.
Reflecting on how the collaboration came to fruition, Mikael Stanne detailed the initial outreach and his deep admiration for the classical ensemble.
“It’s a super-cool event. They contacted us through Tompa, actually, a year and a half ago or something like that, or two years ago almost. Because that’s what the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra does — they will do rare events like that, celebrating a genre or a certain artist or something like that. And they are considered — rightly so — one of the best symphony orchestras in all of Scandinavia and the north of Europe. And they’re incredible. And I’ve seen when they did a show celebrating ‘Krautrock’, and it was — wow — one of the best things I’ve ever seen. That kind of stuff. So it’s super cool,” he said.
The ambitious musical project will be guided by conductor Josef Rhedin, featuring specialized arrangements crafted by Johan Lindström and renowned composer John Metcalfe. Metcalfe brings an impressive mainstream pedigree to the extreme metal tribute, having previously collaborated with global superstars such as U2, Coldplay, and Peter Gabriel.
According to the Dark Tranquillity vocalist, the bands themselves opted to step back and let the 109-piece classical ensemble fully interpret their life’s work.
“When they asked us, [it was] kind of, like, ‘Hey, we’re gonna do this. Do you wanna be part of it or help out? Do you have any suggestions what we should do?’ And then we had some suggestions, but they were, like, ‘Nah, we’re gonna figure it out. We wanna listen to the songs, see what fits,'” he continued. “And the guy who’s written the actual orchestration and stuff like that, he’s an incredible guy who worked with U2 and Peter Gabriel and that kind of stuff. So he’s written the orchestration for a 104-piece orchestra with choir. So, we’re not gonna be part of it other than we’re gonna be dressed up in the concert hall. And we’re just gonna enjoy it. So it’s gonna be 30 minutes of At The Gates, 30 minutes of In Flames, 30 minutes of Dark Tranquillity, kind of in sections. It’s three nights only, and it’s already sold out, way, way, way, way in advance, obviously. But it’s so cool. It’s one of the greatest honors that, I think, we can get. It’s something to play at a fantastic festival that you look forward to, but this is another kind of level of culture where we don’t normally fit into. And so it’s gonna be super cool. And Jonas [Björler] from At The Gates has written one piece that is just gonna be like a tribute to Tompa, and so I think it’s gonna be absolutely beautiful. And I can’t wait.”
For Mikael Stanne, the venue itself holds deep personal significance, bringing his musical journey full circle within his hometown.
“Doing it at home in a place that I used to go with my parents, my grandparents, to see classical stuff or operas and stuff like that when I was a kid, having our music be performed there, [it’s] incredible. So, it’s gonna be one hell of a couple of nights. But it’s a cool thing. And we’re gonna hopefully do things around it to make sure that… Because I know a lot of people who are gonna travel to see it. So we’re gonna try to make some kind of event, just to celebrate it. And for us, I cannot wait. And I don’t wanna know. I know what kind of songs they’re gonna play, but I don’t wanna know more. I just wanna be there, sit there and experience it for the first time on the first night. That’s what I look forward to,” Stanne added.
Given the massive scale and emotional importance of the sold-out tribute nights, fans naturally hope the performances will be captured for a wider audience. When asked if there are firm plans to professionally film and record the orchestral sets, the frontman offered a hopeful update.
“We were talking about that. It’s not finalized yet, but I really hope so because, yeah, it needs to be at least immortalized somehow,” he concluded.

Earlier in January, Mikael Stanne paid tribute to the late At The Gates frontman Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg, crediting him as the singular force behind the development of the celebrated Gothenburg metal scene.
In an interview with Argentina’s “Rocktambulos“, Stanne discussed the profound impact Lindberg had not only on his own career but on the formation of Sweden’s most exportable musical movement. According to Stanne, without Lindberg‘s influence, bands like Dark Tranquillity and In Flames might never have existed.
“Tompa‘s importance to the metal scene in Gothenburg and in Sweden in general cannot be overstated,” Stanne said at the time. “He was, without doubt, the most important character in our city and where we grew up. He was my closest neighbor growing up, so that he taught me everything about music and the underground scene and tape trading and all those things. I met him when I went with a friend to see them rehearse with Grotesque, with this black metal band before At The Gates. And it was the most insane thing I’ve ever seen. And we’ve been we’ve friends ever since. So he was really just an inspiration to me, just because of his kind of vast knowledge and passion for the underground scene. And he knew everything. He’s one of those guys who just absorbs information and knows everything about every f**king album that has been released. He was in contact with all the musicians from all the bands that I loved, and we connected — us and himself — to everyone.”
Stanne admitted that dealing with Lindberg‘s illness and subsequent passing has been a struggle, particularly given the plans the two friends had made for the future.
“It’s been incredibly difficult knowing that he’s been really sick. And we had so many plans and we had so many things that we talked about doing and shows we wanted to go to, and festivals we would travel to, and other things,” Stanne said. “Now that he’s gone, I feel kind of like weird, because I wouldn’t be a singer if it wasn’t for him. There would be no Dark Tranquility without him, there would be no In Flames, there would be no nothing without him. So, we all owe him everything, basically. He was kind of the hub for a lot of… That’s how I met a lot of my friends, was through him, because he was kind of the hub that kept everybody together.”
