Cynic, the progressive metal band, has announced that drummer Matt Lynch is no longer with the group. Lynch joined Cynic in 2014, taking over from Sean Reinert, and has been the band’s drummer until this recent split. Cynic has not yet named a replacement.
In a statement, the band said: “After a meaningful chapter together, we’ve decided to part ways with Matt Lynch. We’re thankful for the time and music shared and wish Matt all the best as he moves ahead.”
During his tenure, Lynch performed on Cynic’s 2018 single “Humanoid” and their 2021 album, Ascension Codes. His drumming on these releases was seen as a strong continuation of Reinert’s influential style.
The band recently performed at Maryland Deathfest 2025 with Gorguts drummer Michael Belanger. It is currently unconfirmed whether Belanger will join Cynic permanently or if his appearance was a temporary arrangement for live shows.
In 2023, Cynic celebrated the 30th anniversary of their album Focus with a North American tour. This tour also served as a tribute to the late Sean Reinert, a founding member since 1988, and bassist Sean Malone. Both Reinert and Malone were highly influential musicians, whose deaths in 2020 added to the band’s history. Malone’s bass playing was known for its intuitive connection with Reinert’s drumming during their years together in Cynic.
Cynic finished their The Aggressive Progressive Tour in March. The 25-date trek went across Europe and the UK, showcasing the band’s celebrated album Ascension Codes, a genre-defying release that blends spirituality with sonic innovation. Supporting Cynic on this journey were Rivers of Nihil, Beyond Creation, and Daath—each bringing their own unique vision of extreme and experimental metal. The tour gave a dynamic experience that pushed the boundaries of progressive music into bold, uncharted territory.
