New York hardcore legends Cro-Mags have officially unleashed their first new music in six years. The pioneering crossover act just dropped a brutal new track titled “Wired For Chaos“, accompanied by an official music video directed by Rex Miller that premiered via Rolling Stone.

The blistering single serves as the first preview of the group’s highly anticipated upcoming studio album. The currently untitled record is slated for a 2027 release through BLKIIBLK, the newly launched heavy metal imprint of Frontiers Label Group.

Frontman and bassist Harley Flanagan broke down the musical direction of the new track, describing a sound that bridges different eras of heavy music.

“It comes in with an aggressive metal intro befitting a UFC walk-in or a video game, then bursts into a more traditional HC thrash vibe before returning to a heavy beatdown at the end in an unmistakable Cro-Mags style.”

Flanagan also shed light on the heavy lyrical inspiration driving the single.

“The song is literally about being programmed and wired for chaos from birth, not just by environment, but by parents, trauma, childhood experiences, and the resulting PTSD that I personally struggle with as a result.”

Earlier this year in March, Flanagan confirmed he was in the studio tracking the new record with current Sepultura drummer Greyson Nekrutman and acclaimed producer Arthur Rizk, widely known for his modern production work on heavy-hitting records by Kreator, Municipal Waste, Code Orange, and Soulfly.

The new single shares its title with a recent documentary film detailing the tumultuous life of the iconic frontman. “Harley Flanagan: Wired For Chaos” hit theaters in June 2025, chronicling his survival through the violent reality of New York’s Lower East Side in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Cro-Mags became a foundational pillar of the hardcore punk movement. By 1982, Flanagan had written and recorded the band’s initial four-song demo entirely on his own, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become the seminal 1986 full-length, Age Of Quarrel, after he teamed up with guitarist Parris Mayhew. Their aggressive fusion of punk and metal has since been cited as a primary influence by massively successful acts ranging from Metallica and Green Day to Dave Grohl.

The upcoming 2027 LP will mark the band’s first full-length effort since In The Beginning, which was released in June 2020 via Arising Empire and Mission Two Entertainment. Prior to that, the group dropped a pair of EPs in 2019: Don’t Give In and From The Grave.

Earlier this January, fans were also treated to a freshly re-recorded version of the classic track “Hard Times“, dubbed the “Wired for Chaos Session“, celebrating both the documentary release and the 40th anniversary of the Age Of Quarrel era.
