The remainder of the 2026 edition of Pitfest in Emmen, Netherlands, was canceled this weekend following the tragic death of an attendee. In the wake of the incident, Cro-Mags vocalist and bassist Harley Flanagan issued a statement extending his condolences and speaking out against aggressive concert behavior.
The fatal medical emergency, which authorities determined was the result of natural causes, occurred on June 6. The situation unfolded on the festival grounds, prompting an immediate response from on-site emergency personnel and the dispatch of a medical rescue helicopter. The attendee initially became unwell during a performance by the hardcore punk band Gorilla Biscuits. The live programming was then officially suspended shortly after the Swedish black metal band Dark Funeral began their headlining set, leading to the early cancellation of the event.
Harley Flanagan, who performed at the festival earlier that same day, took to Instagram today, June 7 to address the tragedy. While acknowledging he was not fully informed on the specifics of the fan’s passing, the veteran New York hardcore musician used the moment to advocate for crowd safety and condemn violent pit trends.

Both the festival organizers and Dark Funeral have also issued public statements regarding the devastating loss.
Addressing the cancellation, the Pitfest organization released the following statement to the public (as translated from Dutch):
“It is with great sadness that we have to announce that during Pitfest one of our visitors died.”
“During the performance of Gorilla Biscuits, someone got unwell on the site. Despite the quick deployment of the emergency services and medical professionals, aid was unfortunately not allowed to be useful anymore. It was later determined that there was a natural cause of death.”
“Out of respect for the deceased, service family, friends and everyone else affected by this sad news, we have decided to discontinue the live music at that time.”
“Our thoughts go out to the bereaved. At a loss for words at moments like these. We wish them much strength and power as they process this loss.”

“Shortly after we began our set at Pitfest, we were informed of a serious medical emergency in the audience. The show was paused while medical personnel attended to the situation and a medical helicopter was called to the scene.”
“Sadly, we later received the news that the person had passed away due to natural causes. Out of respect for the deceased, their family, friends, and loved ones, the promoter made the decision to end the live program.”
