Fan speculation is at a fever pitch regarding the secret new lineup of the reunited progressive metal band Nevermore, with all signs pointing to modern death metal virtuoso Brandon Ellis as the new second guitarist. The theory has been supercharged by the recent release of a new demo collaboration between Ellis and Nevermore founder Jeff Loomis, which showcases a “phenomenal” musical chemistry.
The collaboration, a demo track for Jackson guitars, features the unmistakable, complex riffing of Loomis paired with the fluid and precise lead work of Ellis. The powerful interplay between the two celebrated guitarists has sent the metal community into a frenzy, with many fans believing it’s a “soft launch” for Ellis as the new, yet-to-be-announced member of the legendary band.
The speculation is fueled by Ellis‘s current status as one of metal’s most in-demand free agents. After his acclaimed tenure with The Black Dahlia Murder, which began in 2016, he departed the band earlier this year. He is currently on a high-profile tour as the fill-in guitarist for death metal pioneers Cannibal Corpse, a role that has further cemented his reputation as a top-tier player capable of handling complex and legendary material.
Nevermore officially announced their return in March, confirming that original members Jeff Loomis and drummer Van Williams were leading a new chapter of the band. Their first confirmed performance is a headlining slot at the 2026 edition of Germany’s Wacken Open Air festival. In their initial announcement, the band stated that they had already “assembled a lineup that honors our legacy while forging a new path forward,” confirming that a new vocalist, bassist, and second guitarist have been chosen, though their identities remain a closely guarded secret.
Nevermore disbanded in 2011. The reunion comes after the tragic passing of the band’s iconic and beloved frontman, Warrel Dane, in 2017. While the band has not yet officially confirmed any new members, the tantalizing collaboration between Loomis and Ellis has made the return of Nevermore one of the most anticipated events in recent metal history.
