It has been a turbulent few years for Corrosion of Conformity, but the heavy metal veterans are finally ready to unveil their next chapter. The band has announced that their long-awaited new double album, Good God / Baad Man, will be released on April 3rd via Nuclear Blast.
This marks the band’s first studio output since 2018’s No Cross No Crown. Since then, the group has navigated significant changes and tragedy. In January 2020, founding drummer Reed Mullin passed away, a loss that shook the band to its core. Following the global shutdowns caused by the pandemic, bassist Mike Dean also departed the lineup on amicable terms.
Left to chart the band’s future, vocalist/guitarist Pepper Keenan and guitarist Woody Weatherman retreated to Keenan‘s home in Mississippi. There, they drew inspiration from listening to artists like Discharge, ZZ Top, Motörhead, Neil Young, and Black Sabbath, and began writing with renewed intensity.
The writing sessions were so productive that the band found themselves with too much material for a standard release.
“As we went on, we had such a crazy plethora of songs, it was almost like two different directions,” Keenan explains. “We knew we had to split it into two different albums. Then we came up with this concept.”
That concept became Good God / Baad Man, a project that divides the tracks by their sonic “attitude.”
“Our producer, Warren Riker, kept calling it Dark Side Of The Doom,” Pepper recalled. “In my head, it’s a weird love letter to all things rock ‘n’ roll. We used that for the freedom to go in different directions. Each album is its own tiny universe and has its own identity. Good God leans toward the heavier/pissed end of the spectrum. Baad Man is more on the throwdown rock scope. As we went along, it became clear which songs went on which album.”
To bring these songs to life, the duo recruited familiar faces. Stanton Moore, who previously played drums on the band’s 2005 album In The Arms Of God, returned to the fold. For bass duties, they brought in Bobby “Rock” Landgraf, known for his work with Keenan in Down and his own band Honky.
“With a lot of these songs, we’re trying to make Reed Mullin proud,” Pepper said. “He was a badass, and a one-of-a-kind drummer. And the stakes were high.”
Fans can get their first taste of the new record with the single “Gimme Some Moore,” which features guest appearances from Ministry’s Al Jourgensen and guitarist Monte Pittman. The track was accompanied by a music video directed by Keenan and filmed by Mike Holderbeast.
“Me and Woody wanted to write a song as if we were 17 years old again,” Pepper explained. “We even made a seven-inch for it.”
Produced by Grammy winner Warren Riker, the album was recorded at Blak Shak Studios in Mississippi, Dockside Studios in Louisiana, and Barry Gibb’s home studio in Miami. The cover art was created by New Orleans artist Scott Guion.
