Clutch have released “The Drifter Returns“, their first new music since 2022’s Sunrise On Slaughter Beach.
Clutch have put out “The Drifter Returns” with a lyric video, ending a four-year gap since Sunrise On Slaughter Beach. It is the first thing to surface from the band’s fourteenth album, which they have been building around their touring for the past two years.
Clutch have been playing “The Drifter Returns” live for months, including through their European run earlier in 2026 and at the Élysée Montmartre in Paris on May 31st.
Neil Fallon gave the fullest account of where things stand in December, speaking to Metal Hammer, and made clear the band are not working to anyone else’s clock.
“There will be another writing session in January [of 2026], and the plan is to record in late January or early February [of 2026]. Nowadays, from finishing a record to mastering takes up to six months. And the great thing about being our own record label is that if it doesn’t feel right to put it out at that time, we won’t. We’d rather wait and make it as good as it can be. That’s where we are at. There are a number of songs in the can, but I’m not going to predict when it might be released,” he said at the time.
Asked whether the new material was good, he was characteristically dry: “Every year it gets harder and harder to come up with stuff, because you already have these existing records, but… yeah. We know that [as an album] it’ll be alright.”
The reference to running their own label is not incidental. Clutch have released everything through Weathermaker Music since 2008, which is why no release date has been forced on them.
The band confirmed in May 2025 that Gene “Machine” Freeman was handling the sessions. It is his fifth record with them, following Pure Rock Fury in 2001, Blast Tyrant in 2004, Earth Rocker in 2013 and Psychic Warfare in 2015, a longer association than the band’s own announcements have tended to mention.
Tom Dalgety, who produced Book Of Bad Decisions and Sunrise On Slaughter Beach, had previously been named for the album. Those plans appear to have been dropped.
Clutch play the Maryland State Fair on 12 September, then tour the United States from 16 October to 7 November with Slomosa and Blood Vulture, taking in Charlotte, Richmond, Norfolk and New York.
They have also opened pre-orders for a remastered Collector Series edition of Earth Rocker.
Neil Fallon, guitarist Tim Sult, bassist Dan Maines and drummer Jean-Paul Gaster met at Seneca Valley High School and have played together since forming in Germantown, Maryland in 1991. Thirteen studio albums in, the lineup has never changed.
