Chad I Ginsburg says he did not want to leave the recording sitting on his computer. It is the second CKY song to feature Hinds.
The solo had been finished for a while. Chad I Ginsburg had simply not been able to face doing anything with it.
CKY have put out “Beware Of The Heartless“, a song carrying a guest solo recorded by Brent Hinds before his death last August. It arrives a week short of a year since he died.
“We were reminded that it was a year since our friend Brent passed away,” Ginsburg said. “Brent played a solo on a song we recorded called ‘Beware of the Heartless’ and I thought, ‘why would I leave this on my computer?’ Brent took the time to play on it and we loved him, and in honor of his passing, we were too bummed out in the moment to think about that s**t, but I want to throw it out there because I don’t want to hold onto it forever. I want to let go of it and give it to everyone.”
The band added: “This is the second CKY song to feature Brent‘s guitar, following ‘Days of Self Destruction‘ from The Phoenix.”
“We were supposed to finally hit the UK together last fall, with Brent‘s band Fiend Without A Face. We were all looking forward to it, but sadly that never got to happen.”
“We miss you, Brent.”
That tour would have taken both bands through the United Kingdom and Ireland in the autumn. Hinds died on August 20 last year, aged 51, when his motorcycle collided with a car at the junction of Memorial Drive and Boulevard SE in Atlanta. An informal memorial has since appeared at the intersection. He had left Mastodon five months earlier, after twenty-five years in the band.
The earlier collaboration goes back nearly a decade. “Days Of Self Destruction” was released on May 1, 2017 as the first single from The Phoenix and CKY‘s first new music in eight years, written and produced by Ginsburg, with Hinds on additional guitar. CKY are Ginsburg, bassist Matt Deis and drummer Jess Margera.
Mastodon release Marrow Deep, their first album without Hinds, on August 28.
