The rock and roll world is buzzing after a series of social media posts revealed a mysterious new collaboration between hard rock legend Sammy Hagar, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, and two of metal’s most iconic drummers: Anthrax‘s Charlie Benante and Mötley Crüe‘s Tommy Lee. While details remain scarce, Benante has confirmed he has already laid down drum tracks for a new song.
The surprising cross-genre summit was first teased on Sunday, September 21. Benante posted a photo of himself in a studio with Hagar and Kroeger, confirming that a recording session had taken place.
His wrote in the description:
“When you get a call to come over and play drums on a song that these 2 are doing… you drop whatever it is and go. What a spontaneous thing and so much fun. Thank you both.”
Adding to the mystery, Hagar posted his own separate video from a rehearsal space featuring himself, Kroeger, and Mötley Crüe‘s Tommy Lee. In the clip, Hagar jokingly introduces the trio as “the three best singers in rock ‘n’ roll.” When asked what they were working on, his answer was playfully vague. “It’s hard to say. We’re figuring it out. We’re trying to figure out what we’re doing,” he said.
It is currently unclear whether Benante and Lee are contributing to the same project or separate tracks, or if Lee might also be lending his vocals to the collaboration as Hagar hinted.
This new, mysterious project comes as Hagar is in the midst of a very busy period with his other supergroup. He recently announced an extension of his “Best of All Worlds” Las Vegas residency for 2026, which features a powerhouse lineup of Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Kenny Aronoff.
While the exact nature of the Hagar/Kroeger collaboration remains a secret, the combination of talent from across the rock and metal spectrum has created a massive buzz, with the music world now eagerly awaiting the next “spontaneous” update from this unexpected supergroup.
