More than a year after her initial absence from the road began, former Butcher Babies frontwoman Carla Harvey has offered a candid look into the circumstances surrounding her departure from the band she helped define for over 15 years. In a revealing new interview with Matt Wake of AL.com, Harvey detailed how a medical emergency morphed into a permanent exit.
The timeline of the split traces back to late 2023, when Harvey was forced to sit out a tour due to a severe eye injury. According to the vocalist, the band’s decision to tour without her during her recovery eventually solidified into a new status quo.
“I couldn’t do a tour [in the fall of 2023] because I had a serious eye injury and they went and did a tour without me,” Harvey explained. “Then it was, like, ‘Well, we’ll just do the band by ourselves.’ When you have put your heart and soul into something for so long and you do get kind of squeezed out of it, there’s a moment when you’re, like, ‘I can either lay down and not do anything else, or I’m not gonna let someone else tell me when I’m f**king done doing what I do.’”
Faced with the sudden loss of her primary creative outlet, Harvey credited her husband—Anthrax and Pantera drummer Charlie Benante—with pulling her out of the ensuing depression. Benante not only offered emotional support but actively pushed her to channel her frustration into music.
“He was, like, ‘No, get out of bed. F**k that. We’re gonna write an album,’” Harvey recalled. “Charlie‘s excitement about it was really instrumental in my excitement. He would be playing guitar riffs in the morning with our morning coffee.”
This collaboration birthed The Violent Hour, a new project that released its self-titled debut EP in July via Megaforce Records. The release features Harvey on vocals and lyrics, with Benante handling all instrumentation and composition. The EP also boasts high-profile guest spots, including Mötley Crüe‘s John 5 on the track “Sick Ones” and Pantera‘s Zakk Wylde on “Hell Or Hollywood.”
The internal shift within Butcher Babies was made public in July 2024, when the band released a statement confirming Harvey would not be returning. At the time, the remaining members emphasized gratitude for their shared history.
“Carla has been an integral part of our journey, bringing her unique talent, passion, and energy to the band. We are grateful for the incredible memories we’ve made together and the impact she has had on our music and our fans. We will miss her greatly and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors,” the band stated, adding, “We feel incredibly fortunate to keep making and playing music as our career, and we are excited for this new era of Butcher Babies!”
Simultaneously, Harvey issued her own farewell to the fanbase, validating the suspicions that had grown during her six-month silence.
“Over the last 6 months You may have noticed my absence from Butcher Babies posts,” she wrote. “After 15 years of dedication, I wanted to let you know that I will not be rejoining the band for any future endeavors.”
