Cannibal Corpse released their sixteenth studio album, Chaos Horrific, in September 2023 via Metal Blade Records. Produced by guitarist Erik Rutan (who has now helmed six of the band’s albums and is a full-fledged member), the album was a critical and commercial success, hitting #7 on the Billboard Album Sales chart and #2 on the Hard Music Albums chart.
Bassist Alex Webster commented on the album, stating, “To me, this album feels sort of like a continuation of V*olence Unimagined.” Guitarist Rob Barrett added, “I believe that our songwriting has progressed in a manner where every song paves its own path, whether it’s a straightforward or technical song.“
Erik Rutan also shared his approach to the record: “I never go into a record thinking about anything, I just let the writing flow freely with no limitations. But this time, I knew I wanted to push the envelope a bit in a different direction than V*olence Unimagined — expand the dynamics, explore new territory without departing from what Cannibal Corpse is and always shall be.“
Since their formation in 1988, Cannibal Corpse have been a defining force in death metal, known for their technical musicianship and unflinching lyrical themes, often depicted in cover art by longtime collaborator Vince Locke.
