Josh Todd, the dynamic vocalist of Buckcherry, recently offered insights into his diverse life outside of music, including a memorable chance encounter with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather. In an interview on “Side Jams With Bryan Reesman,” Todd recounted the serendipitous meeting and shared his deep appreciation for the world of boxing.
The pivotal moment occurred in 2010 in Las Vegas, just hours after Floyd Mayweather secured a victory over Shane Mosley. Todd, an avid fan, found himself checking out of his hotel at 6 AM. As he navigated the otherwise deserted casino lobby, he spotted two figures approaching. “I’m saying to myself, ‘That looks like f**king Floyd Mayweather,'” Todd recalled (as transcribed by Blabbermouth). “All of a sudden, he starts getting closer, and it’s f**king Floyd Mayweather and some friend of his. They’re rolling up, just walking towards me, and this is after his big night.” Overwhelmed, Todd‘s raw enthusiasm took over: “‘Unbelievable, man! I love you, man. That performance last night was unreal. I cannot believe you’re standing right here.'” Mayweather‘s response was brief but impactful. “‘Thanks, man,’ and he walked up to me and gave me a hug and then walked off.” The encounter left Todd “so frozen” that capturing a photograph slipped his mind entirely, yet the memory of meeting one of his heroes remains vividly intact.
Todd‘s admiration for boxing extends beyond individual athletes to the very atmosphere of fight events. He noted a unique solidarity among attendees: “There’s a lot of working class people at boxing events, and they go there because they’re passionate about the sport. Everybody’s nice, everybody’s super cool. You can just talk to everybody, and even the celebrities that show up to boxing events, if you’re in the first five rows around the ring, everybody’s just cool. There’s no egos. It’s all love, that’s why I really like it.”
Beyond the ring, Josh Todd cultivates other passions that offer a respite from the demanding life of a rock musician. He spoke enthusiastically about his love for tennis, calling it “really challenging” and an effective way to “forget about music” and “get away from the rat race.” He relishes playing against “all walks of life” – from “dentists and lawyers, teachers, and a lot of dudes that are not in my line of work” – all united by a shared passion for the sport. This provides a “nice break” from constantly being surrounded by fellow musicians. His diverse interests also include becoming a certified phlebotomist during the pandemic, taking up boxing, and pursuing an online college degree in self, society, and the humanities.
In other Buckcherry news, the band recently released their eleventh full-length album, Roar Like Thunder, on June 13. The album was distributed via Round Hill Records in North America, Sony Japan in Japan, and Earache Records globally.
