Bruce Dickinson Recalls Writing Iron Maiden Classics In Empty Jersey Hotel

Bruce Dickinson Interview 2025

Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson recently reflected on the band’s history of writing material on the Channel Island of Jersey. During the 1980s, the heavy metal legends utilized the location to craft three of their most celebrated studio albums: 1983’s Piece Of Mind, 1984’s Powerslave, and 1986’s Somewhere In Time.

Speaking to ITV News during a recent return visit to the island, the vocalist detailed how the band and their crew would rent out an entire hotel during the winter months.

“Frankly, it was cheaper to come here and [rent] a whole hotel out of season,” Bruce recalled (via Metal Hammer). “We’d put the crew in there and the band in there, and of course, because it was a hotel, the hotel had a bar. Well, that was easy! It was open 24 hours a day, because we were inmates!”

The isolation and environment directly influenced their creative output. Bruce Dickinson noted that the hotel possessed only one television. A group viewing of the 1981 horror film “Omen III: The Final Conflict” ultimately inspired the title and thematic elements of Piece Of Mind.

“We had the idea of taking a quote from the Bible, and it came up at the end of the movie, there was a quote from [the Book Of] Revelations,” he explained, quoting the biblical passage: “There shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

“We all went, ‘Pain … brain!’, because the album was a play on words, Piece Of Mind, and we had Eddie with his brain taken out [on the front cover] … We thought up the name of the album in the pub, the Mermaid, ’cause we ended up in the Mermaid having a beer on a Sunday afternoon and bouncing ideas around, and that’s where the idea for Piece Of Mind came from.”

The singer’s return to Jersey was tied to his support for South-North Adventures. Founded by former Oxford University professor Kevin Dutton, the fundraising initiative involves participants traversing the British Isles from south to north via rowing, walking, and cycling. The project benefits several charities, including Heavy Metal Truants, Bikeability, and Every Child Our Future.

Looking ahead, Iron Maiden will resume their “Run For Your Lives” world tour next month, with legs scheduled across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia. The band is also the subject of a new documentary, “Burning Ambition,” arriving in cinemas on May 07. Furthermore, the group will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame this November, though the active members will not attend the Los Angeles ceremony due to their touring schedule.

Outside of his primary band, Bruce Dickinson recently completed recording his next solo album, serving as the direct follow-up to 2024’s The Mandrake Project. The new material was tracked at Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl‘s Studio 606 in California and features guest appearances from members of Sepultura.
