When a catastrophic PA system failure threatened to derail his solo show in Pittsburgh on Saturday night, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson proved why he is a legendary performer, turning a technical disaster into an unforgettable, intimate moment for the fans in attendance. The veteran singer refused to let the night end in disappointment, instead stepping forward to deliver powerful, unamplified a cappella versions of an Iron Maiden classic and the U.S. national anthem.
The dramatic events unfolded on September 13 at Stage AE in Pittsburgh during Dickinson‘s “The Mandrake Project Live 2025” tour. Twelve songs into their set, during a performance of “Book Of Thel,” the entire sound system at the venue abruptly cut out. After a brief restoration that allowed the band to finish the song and launch into “Road To Hell,” the PA failed a second and final time.
With the system declared “completely dead,” the concert was forced to end prematurely, with planned closers like the fan-favorite “Tears Of The Dragon” left unplayed. However, rather than simply leaving the stage, Dickinson seized the moment. Armed with nothing but his world-famous voice, he treated the stunned and delighted crowd to impromptu, unamplified renditions of the Iron Maiden epic “Revelations” and a full-throated performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
The choice of the U.S. national anthem was not random. The Pittsburgh audience was treated to a surprise preview of a performance Dickinson is scheduled to give later today, Sunday, September 14, at the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL home opener. In a recent interview, he had already revealed his plans for that high-profile appearance.
“I’ll let you in to a secret. So, I’ve got to sing the national anthem in Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgh Steelers,” he said. “They’ve asked me to do this. I’m going to do it a cappella and stuff, and as long as you start at the right place, you’re good to go.”
