Brian Wilson, the brilliant and pioneering creative force behind The Beach Boys and the architect of the “California Sound,” has died at the age of 82. His family announced his passing on social media earlier today, Wednesday, June 11.

“We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away,” the family’s statement read. “We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.”

The news comes after it was revealed in February 2024, shortly after the death of his wife Melinda, that Wilson was suffering from dementia.

Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and significant songwriters of the 20th century, Wilson co-founded The Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. As the band’s primary songwriter, producer, and arranger, he crafted a sound that defined a generation. He was among the first rock producers to use the recording studio as an instrument, pushing the boundaries of pop composition.

His genius reached its zenith with the 1966 masterpiece, Pet Sounds. The album’s intricate vocal harmonies, sophisticated arrangements, and studio innovations stunned the music world and remain profoundly influential. The album’s impact was not lost on his contemporaries, including The BeatlesPaul McCartney.

“It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water,” McCartney said in a 1997 interview. “I’ve just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life — I figure no one is educated musically ’til they’ve heard that album.”

Wilson’s immense creative talent was shadowed by a lifetime of personal struggle. He battled schizoaffective disorder, which was diagnosed in 1965, and endured periods of deep depression, substance abuse, and isolation. His life was further complicated by a controversial, multi-year relationship with psychologist Dr. Eugene Landy, who exerted extreme control over his personal and professional affairs until a restraining order was issued in 1992.

A period of resurgence began after he reconnected with and married Melinda Ledbetter in 1995. Wilson credited her with saving his life and career. “Melinda was more than my wife,” he wrote following her passing earlier this year. “She was my savior. She gave me the emotional security I needed to have a career. She encouraged me to make the music that was closest to my heart. She was my anchor.”

With Melinda‘s support, Wilson launched a successful solo career, releasing nearly a dozen albums and returning to regular touring, including a reunion with The Beach Boys in 2012.

Despite his legendary status, Wilson often expressed a humble and vulnerable view of his place in the world. “I’m real scared about being left in the dust, and I don’t want somebody to leave me in the dust to figure the whole thing out,” he said in a 1988 interview, before summarizing his personal philosophy: “I just do my thing and be myself.”
