DeCarlo became known to rock fans through an extraordinary story that saw him go from a devoted fan to the lead voice of Boston. He first discovered the band’s music as a child and remained a passionate admirer throughout his life, later recording covers of their songs in the 1990s and sharing them online.
His life changed dramatically in 2007 following the death of Boston’s original lead singer Brad Delp. Wanting to honor his musical hero, DeCarlo recorded a tribute song along with several Boston covers and uploaded them to a MySpace page at the suggestion of his daughter.
The recordings eventually caught the attention of Boston founder Tom Scholz, who contacted DeCarlo personally. At the time, DeCarlo was working as a credit manager at The Home Depot in the Charlotte, North Carolina area.
Scholz later invited him to audition, and DeCarlo soon joined Boston’s touring lineup. Beginning later that year, he served as the band’s lead or co-lead vocalist on tours, performing many of the group’s classic songs for audiences around the world.
