Former Iron Maiden vocalist Blaze Bayley has shared his thoughts on being included in the legendary British heavy metal band’s upcoming induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s Class of 2026.
Speaking in a new interview with Rev. Tom Brice on “Sportzwire Radio“, the singer addressed his placement on the official list of inductees. Bayley, who fronted Iron Maiden for five years, contributed his vocals to two of the group’s studio albums: 1995’s The X Factor and 1998’s Virtual XI. He will be honored alongside the band’s current lineup, vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bassist Steve Harris, and guitarists Adrian Smith, Dave Murray, and Janick Gers, as well as late former singer Paul Di’Anno, former guitarist Dennis Stratton, and past drummers Nicko McBrain and Clive Burr.
When asked about his feelings regarding the Rock Hall induction, Bayley expressed his deep gratitude for the historic nod, even if accolades were never his primary career motivation.
“ Well, I don’t think any of us get into heavy metal and follow it as a profession to get awards, but it’s nice to be recognized… And the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Led Zeppelin, I mean, giant of giants, almost so big that they can’t be considered as part of normal music. And to be part of that and all the other wonderful artists, to be considered there with the work that I’ve done and the songs that I’ve written and the music that we’ve done, it’s just incredible, really,” he explained.
He went on to emphasize that the true value of the recognition lies in what it means to his loyal supporters around the world.
“What’s interesting, whereas I might go, ‘Well, I’m not in it for awards,’ for a lot of my fans, it’s important for them. For a lot of my fans, it’s important. They think, ‘Yes, he should be recognized.’ And so that’s really, really cool, that my fans enjoy the fact that their favorite singer has been recognized by the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame,” he continued.
When the institution revealed its 17-act ballot on February 25, the legendary British heavy metal group received their third overall nomination, having previously been passed over in 2021 and 2023. However, fans quickly noticed a glaring omission: Blaze Bayley‘s name was nowhere to be found on the ballot. He has since been officially added to the list of band members nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s Class of 2026.
When he was previously excluded from the band’s very first Rock Hall nomination in March 2021, Blaze Bayley spoke to Brazil’s “Heavy Culture” podcast, making it clear that he harbored no resentment toward his former bandmates over the institutional snub.
“Well, it’s not the decision of the band. It’s nothing to do with Iron Maiden, and it’s nothing to do with Iron Maiden management. So it’s all the people who run the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame,” he explained at the time. “The most important thing to me is my friendship with the guys in Iron Maiden, and still being friends after so many years.”
He went on to emphasize that his career validation comes directly from the fans, rather than industry accolades.
“I don’t really care if I’m in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame or I’m not in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. For me, I’m famous, and I don’t have to be any more famous. I have wonderful fans in Brazil and Portugal and around the world, and that is enough for me, man. My fans support me and make this life possible. I live my dream because of my fans and their support — not because of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.”
Manager Rod Smallwood previously confirmed the band will not attend the induction ceremony this fall due to touring commitments in Australia. Additionally, Dickinson publicly criticized the Rock Hall in 2018, calling it “an utter and complete load of bollocks.”
Iron Maiden‘s induction follows years of eligibility, having only been nominated twice before in 2021 and 2023, where they finished fourth in the fan vote. Even though artists become eligible 25 years after the release of their first album, the institution has historically been slow to recognize heavy metal.
During his tenure with the iconic metal outfit, the two studio albums Bayley appeared on saw considerably lower sales compared to the band’s earlier releases. In their home country, the records also marked their lowest-charting titles since the release of 1981’s Killers. Despite the commercial dip at the time, his era of the band has maintained a highly dedicated cult following that continues to celebrate his contributions.
