CBS and Dick Clark Productions have announced that rock icon and 2026 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Billy Idol will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 52nd American Music Awards (AMAs). The honor recognizes Billy Idol‘s massive career, his extensive body of work, and his lasting influence on both the music industry and generations of fans.
For nearly 50 years, Billy Idol has remained one of the most recognizable faces in rock and roll. After gaining prominence as the frontman for the punk band Generation X between 1977 and 1981, he launched a highly successful solo career in 1982 alongside longtime guitarist Steve Stevens. Together, they blended the raw energy of punk with heavy rock hooks to create hits like “Dancing With Myself“, “White Wedding“, “Rebel Yell“, “Eyes Without A Face“, and “Cradle Of Love“.
As part of the ceremony, Billy Idol is set to perform a medley of his greatest hits. This will mark his first-ever performance on the AMAs stage, following a previous appearance as a presenter in 2004. He joins an elite group of previous Lifetime Achievement Award recipients that includes Diana Ross and Rod Stewart.
The executive producers of the show highlighted the singer’s enduring impact on popular culture in a joint statement regarding the selection.
“Billy Idol is a true rock legend whose influence has transcended generations and genres. From his groundbreaking music to his electrifying stage presence, Billy has left an indelible mark on popular culture and the music industry. We are thrilled to honor him with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 52nd American Music Awards and celebrate his legacy with what promises to be an unforgettable performance,” said executive producers Barry Adelman, EVP, Television, and Alexi Mazareas, SVP, Programming & Development, Dick Clark Productions.
Billy Idol has shown no signs of slowing down in recent years. In 2025, he released the album Dream Into It on Dark Horse Records to critical acclaim, followed by the 2026 release of the definitive documentary on his life, titled “Billy Idol Should Be Dead“.
The 52nd AMAs will be hosted by Queen Latifah and will air live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25. The broadcast will be available on the CBS Television Network and will stream on Paramount+.
The star-studded event will feature several high-profile performances, including Karol G, who will receive the International Artist Award of Excellence. Other confirmed performers include Hootie & The Blowfish, Katseye, Keith Urban, Maluma, Riley Green, Sombr, Teddy Swims, Teyana Taylor, and Twenty One Pilots.
The nominations for this year’s awards were released last month, with Taylor Swift leading the field with eight nods. Following closely are Morgan Wallen, Olivia Dean, Sabrina Carpenter, and Sombr, who each earned seven nominations.
While fan voting has concluded for most categories, voting for “Social Song Of The Year” and “Tour Of The Year” will remain open through the first 30 minutes of the live broadcast via VoteAMAs.com and the official AMAs Instagram profile.
The 51st American Music Awards, held in 2025, reached more than 10 million viewers, marking its largest audience since 2019. This year’s ceremony aims to build on that momentum, celebrating the year’s most iconic music through the world’s largest fan-voted awards platform.
