The metal community is mourning the loss of Mastodon co-founder and guitarist Brent Hinds, who died on August 20 in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta, Georgia. The tragic news was made public after Tool guitarist Adam Jones posted a tribute to Hinds, followed by an official statement from Mastodon. In the wake of his passing, his friend and collaborator Bam Margera revealed that they had recently been working together on new music.
Margera shared the news in an emotional statement on Instagram, reflecting on his close friendship with Hinds. The two met at the Soundwave Festival in Australia around the time of the death of Margera‘s close friend, Ryan Dunn. “I met Brent on the Soundwave Festival in Australia and said to him in a joking way ‘you look and act like Ryan Dunn and we should just be best friends’ and he said ‘ok’ and just like that we were,” Margera wrote.
He also provided details about their recent musical partnership. “Brent and I recently had been recording tracks on a new album with a new band I have been doing vocals with called @amoreadlunam,” Margera stated.
He expressed his honor at having worked with Hinds, adding:
“It has been a privilege and honor working with Brent. I cherish the time we spent together working on guitar tracks and vocals that we just very recently layed down together. My friends Stevaughn Decay and Eman have gathered some clips and pics for a special slideshow ending with Brent breaking my arm with a golf club by accident. R.I.P brother.”
The Atlanta Police Department confirmed the details of the fatal crash, which occurred at the intersection of Memorial Drive SE and Boulevard SE. According to the police report, Hinds was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when a BMW SUV, driven by a female driver, failed to yield while turning left and collided with him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV remained at the site of the collision, and the Accident Investigations Unit is currently looking into the circumstances of the crash.
