The metal world is mourning the loss of Tomas Lindberg, legendary vocalist of At The Gates, who has died at the age of 52. Lindberg had been battling adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), a rare and aggressive cancer affecting the mouth and palate.
Lindberg’s influence on extreme music is impossible to overstate. With At The Gates, he helped forge what became known as the Gothenburg sound, the blueprint for melodic death metal. The band’s landmark album Slaughter of the Soul (1995) remains one of the most celebrated releases in the genre, shaping the sound of countless bands worldwide.
Last month, Lindberg made public that he had been living with ACC since late 2023. He underwent major surgery, radiation therapy, and was preparing for further treatment.
In a statement he shared last month, he wrote: “In December 2023, I was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (a cancer in the mouth and palate) and have since then gone through a lot, it has been a very tough year. First there was a major surgery, where they took away a big part of the roof of the mouth. This was followed by radiation therapy for two months, and ever since it has been a long hard path towards recovery. Now, in the beginning of 2025, they have found some remains of the cancer, and it is inaccessible by surgery or radiation. So, we will see what the next step is, but probably some form of chemotherapy, to keep the cancer in check.”
Beyond his unmistakable voice, Lindberg was admired for his lyrics, intellect, and unwavering commitment to his craft. His passing leaves a hole not just in At The Gates, but in the wider metal community that he inspired for over three decades.
Metal Stop sends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans around the globe.
