Tomas Lindberg passed away on September 16, 2025, after battling adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of oral cancer that he was diagnosed with in December 2023. He underwent extensive surgery to remove part of the roof of his mouth, followed by two months of radiation therapy. Although he initially seemed to be on the mend, the cancer resurfaced in early 2025, and by May, further complications led to the need for long-term care. His bandmates later shared that he was receiving continuous, around-the-clock treatment.
In a deeply personal statement written in March 2025 and shared publicly that August, Lindberg reflected on his struggle: “It has been a very tough year. First there was a major surgery, where they took away a big part of the roof of the mouth. This was followed by radiation therapy for two months, and ever since it has been a long hard path towards recovery. Now, in the beginning of 2025, they have found some remains of the cancer, and it is inaccessible by surgery or radiation.”
Despite the devastating news, Lindberg was determined to finish recording his vocals for the album. In an extraordinary effort, the final tracks were laid down in just one day, largely captured in single takes, on the eve of his surgery: “The last version of the vocals, the ones that will end up on the album, were recorded in ONE day, mostly one takes, the DAY before the surgery, just to make sure we HAD the album, so to speak.”
Describing The Ghost Of A Future Dead as a creative reunion, Lindberg highlighted that it marked the first time in a decade that he, Jonas Björler, and Anders Björler had worked together extensively on a full album. Musically, he said it blends the ferocity of Slaughter of the Soul with the modern sound the band explored on At War with Reality.
“The Fever Mask” provides the first taste of what could be the band’s final statement.
