Swedish melodic death metal pioneers At The Gates have shared a deeply moving tribute honoring their late frontman, Tomas Lindberg. In the emotional update, band members also detailed the complex recording process for their forthcoming studio album following the singer’s devastating cancer diagnosis.
In December 2023, the celebrated vocalist was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma. Despite the heartbreaking news, the band collectively decided to push forward with their next full-length release, tracking the instrumental portions at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, with producer Jens Bogren during the early months of 2024.
Explaining the initial timeline and how the band navigated the challenging situation, the group shared via social media:
“We had the album pretty much written by mid December 2023, when Tomas got the bad news. We decided together with him that we probably should move ahead and record the music in February/March as planned and then record the vocals later in 2024.”
Unfortunately, the frontman’s health began to rapidly decline, leaving him unable to formally record his final studio vocal tracks.
Detailing how they successfully salvaged the project using earlier sessions, the remaining members of At The Gates noted:
“As this plan never materialized, we went back to check the demo vocals he had been recording prior to the studio recording with Per Stålberg. We were all very surprised by how good these takes were, especially Tomas himself. While in Fascination Street Studios we kept Tomas in the loop every day sending pictures, videos and progress reports in order to give him something positive to focus on after the first surgery and recuperation period. The recording went very well and we all gave our 100% for this album.”
At The Gates had originally hoped to drop the new record once their singer was fully recovered. Tragically, in September 2025, just a few short months after publicly disclosing his health battle, the beloved musician passed away at the age of 52.
Reflecting on the painful waiting period and the eventual decision to release the record posthumously, the band revealed:
“The whole of 2024 and some months into 2025 became just a waiting game for Tomas to recuperate and get better. We continuously pushed the album forward trying to find a release date that would work. In the first months of 2025 things actually looked a bit brighter, but in early May [Tomas] went through a setback that he never recovered from. In August we felt the time was right to publish the news regarding his situation. This is an extremely important album for us all. We have poured our hearts into it. Hope you will like it too.”
The completed posthumous album, titled The Ghost of a Future Dead, will officially arrive on April 24. Utilizing the demo vocals previously captured by the frontman, the release stands as a powerful final tribute from At The Gates to their fallen brother.
Honoring his immeasurable legacy, the band offered the following heartfelt dedication:
“Tomas, we miss your smile, your warmth, your creativity, your compassion and your humour. You inspired us in everything; from picking up instruments and starting a band back in the day, getting us interested in all kinds of music, art and literature. The world will never be the same. You are forever missed. This album is for you.”

Tomas Lindberg passed away on September 16, 2025, after battling adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of oral cancer that he was diagnosed with in December 2023. He underwent extensive surgery to remove part of the roof of his mouth, followed by two months of radiation therapy. Although he initially seemed to be on the mend, the cancer resurfaced in early 2025, and by May, further complications led to the need for long-term care. His bandmates later shared that he was receiving continuous, around-the-clock treatment.
