Swedish melodic death metal pioneers At The Gates have reached a historic milestone, claiming the No. 1 position on their home country’s official album chart with their latest release, The Ghost Of A Future Dead.
This achievement marks the very first time the influential group has topped the main Swedish album chart. Released on April 24 through Century Media Records, the highly anticipated record also dominated the charts across specific formats, debuting at No. 1 on the Swedish physical, vinyl, and hard rock charts.
Arriving as the direct follow-up to 2021’s The Nightmare of Being, the new album carries immense emotional weight. It serves as a profound final statement and tribute to legendary At The Gates frontman Tomas Lindberg, who tragically passed away at the age of 52 in September 2025.
Tomas Lindberg was initially diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare form of oral cancer, in December 2023. The diagnosis led to a major surgery that removed a large portion of the roof of his mouth. After undergoing radiation treatment, the vocalist appeared to be on the path to recovery. Unfortunately, doctors discovered traces of the cancer returning in early 2025. By May of that year, an undisclosed health setback placed him in long-term medical care until his passing.
The recording and mixing for The Ghost Of A Future Dead were handled by acclaimed producer Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden. The album’s visual presentation features striking artwork created by Robert Samsonowitz.
