At The Gates have issued their final studio album featuring late frontman Tomas Lindberg yesterday, April 24. The release comes about seven months after his passing following a battle with cancer, giving the record a particularly poignant weight. Titled The Ghost Of A Future Dead, the album includes vocal performances Lindberg recorded as demos before undergoing surgery and treatment for adenoid cystic carcinoma.
To coincide with the release, the band have also unveiled an animated video for “In Dark Distortion,” created under the direction of Costin Chioreanu, who has previously collaborated with the group and is also known for his work with Ghost and Corrosion Of Conformity.
Recorded and mixed at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden with Jens Bogren, the album features artwork by Robert Samsonowitz. According to the band’s description, the record continues to push their sound into darker and more conceptual territory while remaining rooted in their signature style.
Describing The Ghost Of A Future Dead as a creative reunion, Lindberg highlighted that it marked the first time in a decade that he, Jonas Björler, and Anders Björler had worked together extensively on a full album. Musically, he said it blends the ferocity of Slaughter of the Soul with the modern sound the band explored on At War with Reality.
Tomas Lindberg, who co-founded At The Gates in 1990, was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare cancer affecting the mouth and palate, in December 2023. He began treatment in early 2024, though the public was not informed of his condition until August 2025. Following an initial surgery that appeared successful, the disease returned in 2025. He was readmitted to the hospital and passed away on September 16 due to complications during his recovery.
