Anthrax play the grand reopening of Saint Vitus Bar in Bushwick on 4 September, with the show being filmed.
Anthrax are playing a room they could sell out fifty times over. The band have been announced for the grand reopening of Saint Vitus Bar at its new Brooklyn home, 428 Troutman Street in Bushwick, on Friday 4 September. Tickets go on sale tomorrow.
The date puts them first through the door. When Saint Vitus published its initial reopening schedule in late July, the earliest booking on it was Immolation on 12 September. Anthrax now go on eight days before that.
Anthrax wrote: “NEW YORK CITY. We’re honored to be perfoming at the grand re-opening of the legendary Saint Vitus Bar on September 4th. We’ll be filming the entire show, capturing every intimate moment. Bring the mosh and live forever with us in the histories of New York Thrash. Tickets on sale tomorrow (Friday, August 28th).”
The venue opened on 11 April 2011 at 1120 Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, a 250-capacity room of about 2,500 square feet started by Arty Shepherd, Justin Scurti and George Souleidis with two silent partners. It became the metal venue in New York, Pitchfork called it the best in the city, Kerrang! one of the most important places in the world to see loud music, and hosted everyone from unsigned hardcore bands to unannounced sets by members of Nirvana, Blink-182, Megadeth and Anthrax.
During the pandemic a Kickstarter set up to keep it going asked for $15,000 and took more than $125,000 inside two months.
It ended on 16 February 2024, when the Department of Buildings shut the venue down mid-show during a hardcore gig after finding it lacked the permits to operate as a live music space. A neighbour had complained repeatedly. The owners confirmed that August that it would not reopen at that address, and have spent the two years since booking shows around the city under the name Vitus Presents.
The Bushwick site was previously Brooklyn Made, which closed in February 2025 after a little over three years. At 500 capacity it is double the size of the Greenpoint space, though still small enough to make an Anthrax show there a curiosity.
The reopening was announced on 3 July through a run of Instagram videos following Günther, the mannequin that stood by the bar in Greenpoint, on his journey across Brooklyn to the new address.
Bookings after Anthrax include Immolation with Ancient Death and Siege Column on 12 and 13 September, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal on the 16th, All Shall Perish with Carnifex on the 19th, Buzz Kull on the 20th, The Dillinger Escape Plan on 14 October and Emma Ruth Rundle with Cinder Well on 10 December.
The show falls two weeks before Cursum Perficio, the band’s twelfth album and their first in a decade, which Megaforce release in the United States and Nuclear Blast in Europe on 18 September.
Anthrax formed in Queens on 18 July 1981 around guitarist Scott Ian and then-bassist Dan Lilker, and were among the first thrash bands to come out of the East Coast.
