Philip Labonte, the founding vocalist of the platinum-selling metalcore band All That Remains, is seeing renewed focus on his advocacy work regarding the societal challenges facing young men. His highly circulated 2024 op-ed, “The Silent Crisis: Why Society Is Failing Men And Boys”, is gaining fresh momentum following the introduction of relevant federal legislation.
The newly proposed legislation, spearheaded by Representatives Nathaniel Moran (TX-1) and Derrick Van Orden (WI-3), mirrors the exact concerns the singer previously outlined. Following the publication of his op-ed, Phil Labonte participated in multiple meetings on Capitol Hill to discuss actionable ways Congress could better support the demographic.
In his original piece, the musician pointed to a concerning trend of male disengagement from the workforce, education systems, and community involvement. He also highlighted the alarming spikes in male suicide, addiction, and depression rates. He noted that his perspective was largely shaped by years of interacting directly with his fanbase, who frequently confide in him about their feelings of isolation and purposelessness.
“We are watching too many young men drift without direction or support,” Labonte stated. “If we don’t take this seriously, we risk losing an entire generation not just of men, but of fathers and leaders.”
Recent statistics support his warnings. Data from the Pew Research Center indicates that men currently account for only 44% of enrolled college students, while the National Institute of Mental Health continues to report vastly disproportionate suicide rates among males.
While he views the new congressional legislation as a positive development, the singer continues to push for a wider cultural shift and broader public awareness.
“This is a societal issue that requires real attention and real solutions,” Phil added. “Acknowledging the problem is just the beginning.”
