Rock icon Alice Cooper recently sat down with 95.5 KLOS radio legend Frazer Smith to discuss his upcoming studio album, The Revenge Of Alice Cooper, set for release on July 25 via earMUSIC. This highly anticipated project sees Cooper collaborating once more with surviving members of the original Alice Cooper band: guitarist Michael Bruce, bassist Dennis Dunaway, and drummer Neal Smith. The album is dedicated to their late original guitarist, Glen Buxton, who passed away in 1997, and is being hailed as a spiritual successor to foundational records such as School’s Out, Billion Dollar Babies, Love It to Death, and Killer.
Cooper shed light on the genesis of this significant reunion, emphasizing that their initial separation was not acrimonious. “When we parted, we didn’t divorce; we just separated. There was no bad blood. There was no lawsuits or anything like that. And we stayed in touch with each other,” Alice revealed to 95.5 KLOS (as transcribed by Blabbermouth). The decision to record a full album came organically: “And finally, at one point — they had worked on some of my albums — I said, ‘Why don’t we just do an album?’ Ah we got [longtime producer] Bob Ezrin involved. And I was absolutely amazed. Everything went so smoothly. We wrote all these songs, and it sounded exactly like 1975.”
The album’s first single, “Black Mamba,” featuring the legendary Robby Krieger of The Doors, was released in April. Cooper also spoke about the contributions to the new material, noting the impact of Buxton’s absence and the addition of new talent. “Losing Glen was really tough for us ’cause he was our Keith Richards,” he explained. “We got Robby Krieger to play on ‘Black Mamba‘, which was perfect for that song. And we found a guy named Gyasi [Hues] in Nashville that just fit in perfectly.”
The seamless collaboration extended beyond the music, into their personal connection. When asked if the bandmates reconnected instantly as friends, Alice responded, “Absolutely. It was never a beat even [that was missed]. It just felt like this was the album that should have come out after Billion Dollar Babies. It had that feel to it.”
This isn’t the first time the surviving original members have shared a stage or studio. Their history includes a 1999 performance at the second Glen Buxton Memorial Weekend, a 2010 reunion at Alice Cooper‘s Christmas Pudding, and a notable appearance at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony in 2011. They also performed a record store reunion concert, documented in “Alice Cooper: Live From The Astroturf“, and made guest appearances on select tracks from Cooper‘s solo albums Welcome 2 My Nightmare, Paranormal, and Detroit Stories.
