Shock rock legend Alice Cooper stunned fans on Saturday, April 11, by unleashing an unexpected cover of the Nirvana grunge anthem “Smells Like Teen Spirit” during his headlining set. The performance took place at the 28th annual Coopstock music festival, held at the Las Sendas Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona.

For the surprise rendition, the frontman was backed by his formidable touring band, featuring guitarists Ryan Roxie and Tommy Henriksen, bassist Chuck Garric, drummer Glen Sobel, and guitarist Anna Cara. Fan-filmed footage of the cover, courtesy of the RichG LIVE YouTube channel, has already begun circulating online.

The outdoor fundraising bash boasted a star-studded lineup of music icons alongside the main event. Special guest appearances throughout the night included Kiss guitarist Tommy Thayer, pop-rock veteran John Oates, and local Arizona favorites Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers.

All proceeds generated from the annual Coopstock festival directly benefit Alice Cooper‘s Solid Rock Teen Centers, an organization dedicated to offering free art, music, and dance programs to local youth. The weekend’s philanthropic efforts continued on Sunday, April 12, with the Alice Cooper‘s Rock & Roll Golf Classic, also hosted at the Las Sendas Golf Club. The long-running charity event routinely draws massive crowds, with organizers anticipating over 2,500 attendees for this year’s installment.

On April 2, Alice Cooper introduced British guitarist Anna Cara in place of his longtime guitarist Nita Strauss, who announced earlier this year that she was taking a break to welcome her first child this summer.

22-year-old Anna, from Newcastle, England, has previously worked with Marc Storace (from the Swiss band Krokus) and Tommy Henriksen (guitarist with both Alice and the Hollywood Vampires). She has built an Instagram following with her videos.
