The Slaughter To Prevail frontman has posted the complete cover a month after a teaser drew a response from Korn‘s Brian “Head” Welch.
Before Slaughter To Prevail existed, Alex Terrible was a man in Yekaterinburg posting vocal covers to YouTube. He has gone back to that, and this time one of the songwriters answered.
The frontman has put out his full deathcore reworking of Korn‘s “Freak On A Leash“. He teased a clip of it roughly a month ago, which reached Brian “Head” Welch, a co-writer of the original, and drew a public response from him.
“Freak On A Leash” came off Follow The Leader, the 1998 album that entered the Billboard 200 at number one, and went out as a single the following February. Credited to Jonathan Davis, James Shaffer, Reginald Arvizu, Welch and David Silveria, it won the Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video, the clip built around Todd McFarlane‘s animated sequence and a bullet travelling out of it.
Alex Terrible, born Aleksandr Shikolay, built his audience on exactly this kind of thing before he had a band. The covers led him to English guitarist Jack Simmons, who was in Essex at the time, and the two put Slaughter To Prevail together across two countries and an internet connection.
Their third album, Grizzly, arrived on July 18 last year through Sumerian Records, with guest appearances from Ronnie Radke and Babymetal. Alongside Terrible and Simmons, the band is rhythm guitarist Dmitry Mamedov, bassist Mikhail Petrov and drummer Evgeny Novikov. They spend this year on main-stage festival slots across the United States, Canada and Europe with a new stage production.
As for the band whose song he has taken apart, Korn have material written but no record scheduled. Welch said in February that work continues while the band concentrates on touring instead.
