AC/DC has encountered an unexpected medical situation during the South American leg of their current “Power Up” tour. Rhythm guitarist Stevie Young has been admitted to a hospital in Buenos Aires just days before the band is scheduled to perform a highly anticipated series of concerts in the Argentine capital.
Addressing the sudden health scare, an official representative for the group provided a reassuring update to Reuters earlier today (Thursday, March 19). Detailing the 69-year-old musician’s current condition and his eagerness to return to the stage, the spokesperson confirmed:
“Out of an abundance of caution, [Stevie] was admitted to a local hospital where he is undergoing a full battery of tests. Stevie is doing well and is in good spirits. He is looking forward to getting on stage on Monday.”
AC/DC is officially slated to play three consecutive shows in Buenos Aires on March 23, March 27, and March 31.
Stevie Young is the nephew of the band’s iconic founding brothers, Malcolm Young and Angus Young. He was formally brought into the fold as a permanent member back in 2014, stepping in for Malcolm after the foundational rhythm guitarist was forced to retire due to a devastating dementia diagnosis.
Reflecting on the difficult lineup transition during a 2014 interview with Sweden’s Aftonbladet, lead guitarist Angus Young explained that his nephew was the only natural successor for the critical role.
“It was Malcolm himself [who said we should carry on]… and the logical choice to fulfill Mal‘s role on the project was my nephew Stevie. He had filled in for Mal in 1988 and he had done an American tour, a whole American tour, and he did it well.”
Further elaborating on the seamless musical integration during a separate chat with “The Pulse Of Radio,” the legendary guitarist detailed how family ties shaped the group’s signature sound.
“He just plugged into what we were doing, ’cause he’s of the same age era as Malcolm and myself. He was my eldest brother’s son. You know, we all grew up together. Mal played that style how he played that rhythm style. Stevie, you know, he emulated that.”
Tragically, Malcolm Young passed away in November 2017 at the age of 64, having battled dementia for at least three years prior to his death.
