New police reports and 911 calls reveal conflicting witness accounts in the motorcycle crash that killed former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds.

The recent motorcycle crash that tragically claimed the life of former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds has been the subject of new, detailed police reports and 911 calls that shed further light on the circumstances of the accident. The crash, which occurred on August 20, is now being investigated with conflicting witness accounts that paint a more complex picture of what happened.

According to a report from the Atlanta Police Department, Hinds was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when a BMW SUV made a left turn, striking him. The SUV’s driver told police she was “positive the light was green” as she made the turn. However, a witness on the scene provided a contradictory statement, telling officers he saw the light was red at the time of the collision. This same witness, along with a second witness, stated that Hinds was “driving fast” just before the impact.

Further details were revealed in a 911 call from a person who was two cars behind the accident. The caller described a terrifying scene, recalling hearing the impact and seeing Hinds‘ body go “up in the air” and spin before falling. The police report also noted that when officers arrived, Hinds was still breathing and moving but had visible injuries to his head, arms, and torso. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The new details surrounding the crash add a tragic layer to the already somber news of Hinds‘ passing. His former Mastodon bandmates have expressed their deep grief, with drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor delivering a heartfelt tribute at a concert just two days after the accident. Dailor spoke of the deep brotherhood that defined their 25 years together, a relationship that had its “ups and downs” but was built on shared love and a passion for creating music. Hinds’ legacy, defined by his innovative guitar work and creative vision, will be honored with a “celebration of life” to be held in Atlanta. These ceremonies are typically informal gatherings focused on commemorating a person’s life and positive impact, providing friends and family a space to share memories and find solace.
