Following the tragic death of frontman Brad Arnold earlier this month, fans across the United States have revisited the catalog of 3 Doors Down in massive numbers, propelling the band to a bittersweet milestone on the Billboard charts. For the first time in their career, the group has secured the No. 1 spot on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart with their debut hit, “Kryptonite,” as reported by Forbes.
The surge in consumption across streaming platforms like Spotify and digital retailers like iTunes has pushed the band’s music back into the spotlight. While “Kryptonite” has been a staple of rock radio for over 25 years—spending nearly 300 weeks as one of the nation’s most-streamed hard rock tracks—it had never previously reached the summit of this specific streaming tally until now.
The renewed interest has resulted in a chart takeover. “Kryptonite” jumped from No. 6 to No. 1 on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs list. Additionally, the song has re-entered the top spot on both the Hot Hard Rock Songs and Hard Rock Digital Song Sales charts, territories it has dominated in the past.
The band’s success this week isn’t limited to just one song. 3 Doors Down effectively blocked themselves from securing a new No. 1 on the Hot Hard Rock Songs tally. While “Kryptonite” returned to the peak position, the band’s other massive hit, “When I’m Gone,” debuted at No. 2.
On the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart, “When I’m Gone” opened at No. 4, doubling the band’s total number of top-tier entries on that specific list.
According to data from Luminate, the tracking week following Arnold’s passing saw a dramatic spike in sales. “Kryptonite” sold 4,500 copies across digital platforms, a massive increase of over 200% from the previous period. These figures helped the track re-enter the Alternative Digital Song Sales chart at No. 3 and the Rock Digital Song Sales chart at No. 4.
The wave of listening also pushed the band onto the Billboard Global 200 for the first time. Fans clearly favored the classics, driving “Here Without You” to debut at No. 135 and “Kryptonite” to enter at No. 180 on the worldwide ranking.
Furthermore, “Kryptonite” achieved new peaks on several other domestic charts, reaching No. 7 on Hot Alternative Songs and No. 8 on both the Hot Rock Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs listings.
On February 7, 3 Doors Down confirmed that Arnold passed away at the age of 47.
They issued a statement which reads as follows:
“With heavy hearts, we share the news that Brad Arnold, founder, lead singer, and songwriter of 3 Doors Down, passed away on Saturday, February 7th, at the age of 47.”
“With his beloved wife Jennifer and his family by his side, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in his sleep after his courageous battle with cancer.”
“As a founding member, vocalist, and original drummer of 3 Doors Down, Brad helped redefine mainstream rock music, blending post-grunge accessibility with emotionally direct songwriting and lyrical themes that resonated with everyday listeners. Brad‘s songwriting became a cultural touchstone for a generation, producing some of the most enduring hits of the 2000s, including the band’s breakout hit, “Kryptonite,” which he wrote in his math class when he was just 15 years old. His music reverberated far beyond the stage, creating moments of connection, joy, faith, and shared experiences that will live on long after the stages he performed on.”
“Above all, he was a devoted husband to Jennifer, and his kindness, humor, and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. Those closest to him will remember not only his talent, but his warmth, humility, faith, and deep love for his family and friends.”
“The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time and kindly asks that their privacy be respected.”
“He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.”
